Senex puerum portabat:
puer autem senem regebat:
quem virgo peperit,
et post partum virgo permansit:
ipsum quem genuit, adoravit.
An old man carried the child,
but the child ruled the old man:
him whom the Virgin bore,
and after birth remained virgin:
the same one whom she begat, she adored.
About the piece
The text for this piece is a Magnificat antiphon for Vespers on Candlemas, the Feast of the Presentation of Jesus. It is about the great mystery of God being a little child. The bass part for the piece is based on the chant setting of the antiphon from the Liber Usualis, with its rhythmic values drawn out.
